private maternity care.... help!!
Good advice/ help/ suggestions urgently needed!!
I'm pregnant and moving to Nairobi in a matter of weeks with my partner who will be working out there. We (maybe naivly ) presumed we would be able to get private health cover and all would be fine but it now seems that for maternity care- I need to have a policy for a minimum of 10 months before to be covered...... so, has anyone else been in this situation before? has anyone got cover that doesnt have the wait period.....or does anyone know how much private healthcare in Nairobi is in general if we have to pay ourselves....
what a nightmare!

Private Healthcare & Pregnancy
Hi,
Sorry for your dilemma! However, healthcare here is no SO, so expensive if you end up having to pay for it yourself.
I had a fright with my middle child, as I went back to UK to have her and was told that since I was living outside the UK, I would have to pay! Ended up getting let off, but this would have been expensive!
My third child was born in Nairobi and we paid for it ourselves. The healthcare here is in fact wonderful. I had an obstetrician at the Aga Khan hospital, Dr Verma - there is also a very good female obst, there now called Dr Carvello. All the scans were done my Dr Handa at the MP Shah hospital in Nairobi. The Nairobi Hospital is also private and very good.
An obstetrics appointment is around 4,000-5,000 Kenya shillings. Scans, 4,000 - the actual birth depends on if you have a c-section etc. then there's the cost per night at the hospital. In 2005 stayed there 2 nights, natural birth - cost about 250,000-280,000 shillings all in. Fantastic hospital, private ensuite room, great care.
Good luck!
