Arriving in June! Empty Arriving in June!

Post  White House Thu Feb 02, 2012 10:39 pm

It is official, we will arrive to Nairobi in mid-June. Excited and overwhelmed. affraid My husband will be working at the airport, I'll be home sewing/quilting and other crafty things with our black lab who likes to sleep all day. I could use some guidance on an area to search for our home. We'd like to be in a larger development where we can walk the dog around the neighborhood, maybe I'll start running, who knows! I've read that the commute to the airport on a daily basis could be hard on my husband. Does that really mean we shouldn't live north? What would you recommend? And I've heard that homes rent within hours of being "on the market". Yikes!

I've also heard that there is a move from houses into townhouses/apartments. True? Nice? We've been living in an apartment here in Bogota for 4 yrs and we are both ready to be back in a house for another 4 yrs.

I'm sure I will have more questions but let's start with housing.
TIA.

Arriving in June! Empty Arriving in June

Hi TIA,

Thanks for getting in touch. Yes, the airport road commute is tiresome but it's also done by so many people every day. I think it's all about tactics - leaving home early, leaving work early or later after rush hour - especially on busier days like Monday morning/Friday evening. Lots of people do commute to the industrial area from the Langata/Karen direction, but it actually can be quicker these days to be coming from Lavington/Hurlingham if you use Mbgathi Way. (Langata road has a tendancy to get totally jammed) All a bit confusing!

Karen/Langata area has more space and quieter neighbourhoods (traffic wise) for dog walking/running. Smart town house complexes are popping up everywhere in this area (and they are v nice, modern kitchens etc), but there are still lots of self contained houses with their own plot/garden (these are more difficult to find but certainly not impossible). Generally the rents are now around 250,000- 300,000/- Kenya shillings for a 4/5 bed house with garden - town houses are they same but often include security/water etc in the rent. Lavington is more apartment complexes these days, but again, you can definitely find the odd self contained house with garden if you are lucky.

I think that living North of the city in Muthaiga/Gigiri/Runda - might be a bit mad if your husband is going to the industrial area. They are in the process of building good ring roads, but we are not there yet.

Don't worry - you will definitely find something quite easily. Look at www.xpatlink.info for a general idea on what's available. Estate agents are plentiful in each area. Also look at www.kenyabuzz.com and www.propertykenya.com

You'll love it when you get here!
