Hi there,
Thanks so much for this forum it gives so much information about everything, really a big help! I did get a lot of answers already but I still have some, I’m grateful for any helpful answer!
We will probably be moving to Nairobi from Johannesburg my son is now 3 month old and I’m just a little worried , I saw in older posts that Health care is excellent so that is already great and I know Nairobi is a low risk area for Malaria. I just wanted to find out what you using as a mosquito repellent for babies? There is a lot of stuff out there but not all of them really work well…
Is there a good quality lotion for babies ? And with what spray do you treat the Mosquito Net?
There are a lot of Vaccinations which he’s still too young for so I guess a paediatrician in Nairobi will advise me on when to carry on with them?
As I can read from other posts Karen and Langata are nice areas? My husband will be working at the Vision Plaza on Mombasa road so it’s about 20km away so not too bad (I do understand traffic is bad). Are there Townhouses in a Complex or Plots? We do have 3dogs and 2cats which will be coming with so I was wondering which of those areas would be nicer to walk them?
I was also wondering if anyone of you Ladies is part of a Christian Family Church?
Is there is a German community?
Is there a possibility of getting a permanent residence if we like to stay there for longer as my husband’s contract goes? Or will this be impossible?
Thanks so much for taking the time to read this, really appreciate it!

Hi there,

Thanks for joining the forum. First of all, don't worry! All will be fine when you get here.

Mosquitos and malaria:
1. mosquito repellent for babies - I used to put some drops of citronella oil (from health food store) into a small bottle of johnsons baby oil. That was ages ago. I know that South Africa has some good products. You can buy repellent here from supermarkets, or for more specialised ones try chemists (chain called Mimosa) or heath food stores (Healthy U).

2. Nowadays you buy the mosquito nets from the supermarket (nakumatt) already treated - the treatment lasts 3 years or so. I think you'll find some preventing malaria tips elsewhere in this forum, or certainly on my blog (click on the tab that says, will I get malaria?) - however the best tip is to close windows in the house by 5pm and pull nets down, then spray underneath with a supermarket product such as Doom. Leave the room for 20mins or so for the Doom spray to disburse. However, these are tips I might give to somebody who is moving to the coast. Many people do not sleep with nets over the bed in Nairobi as it's high altitude here, so there are mosquitos - but not malaria carrying ones. We sleep with nets just because it's annoying to have a mosquito buzzing in your ear.

Vaccinations:
I found this a tricky one but I am sure that your peadiatrician in South can advise you. It was only tricky for me because we are so spoiled in UK with the National Health Service. I found having to remember what vaccinations were due when for my kids (x3) without constant posted or phone reminders, a bit confusing. However, once I joined a local doctors surgery in Nairobi, the nurse and I figured it all out and we filled up the record card on all the right dates etc. BCG is given at birth here in Kenya.
In addition, I would recommend that you and your husband go ahead and have typhoid, hep A&B, polio, tetanus etc. Make sure you are completely up to date with any vaccinations you need then you have peace of mind. Any boosters necessary at a later date, can be done here.

Karen and Langata:
They are both nice areas. See previous post - re Langata v Karen. Langata might be marginally better for dog walking as it is quieter traffic and better for your husband's commute but both are v beautiful, have good access to shops and there's not much in it. There are lots of secure town house complexes/developments in both areas, as well as self contained compounds/houses.

Christian Family Church:
Try The Vineyard - services held at Hillcrest school on Langata road on Sundays

German Community.
There is definitely a german community in Nairobi. There's even a German School in Runda (on the other side of town to Karen/Langata). Try contacting the german embassy here as they might have some leads for german spouse groups/organisations etc.

Permanent residence:
Most expats continue renewing their 2 year work/residency permit and stay for upwards of 20 years - it's not a problem. There is a new law coming in April that states you can apply for Kenya citizenship if you have been resident for a certain number of years (not sure of all the conditions) and may be able to maintain duel citizenship, which would make permanent residency easier.

Check out websites kenyabuzz.com and wordofmouth.co.ke for more info on stuff to do etc. and keep reading the africa expat wives club blog!

Good luck!! Wink
