So we are moving from the US to Nairobi Kenya for 2 years and the one thing my family cannot seem to leave behind is american television. While we only watch on weekends and holidays and weeknights for parents only we still like to be able to watch what we want, when we want! What do most people do for television viewing? I have heard the internet is not so reliable and you cannot get netflix or hulu regardless so what is the best option for viewing US/American programming I welcome all ideas/solutions! Thanks!!!

Hi, I am in the process of looking into this myself, and have heard that one can get DSTV http://www.dstv.com/ but I have no idea what shows they offer.

DSTV is available most places and Zuku which seems to me like a better deal is popping up here and there (see the coverage map). I believe DSTV will lease you a a DVR so you can watch what you want when you want. You won't get current US TV programming for the most part. They license the shows to air first in the US then on SkyTV and others a few months later. Another option is to pick up seasons of TV shows at a video store. At the Sarit center they're 600KSH per season, maybe cheaper elsewhere.

The pirate dvds can be a bit hit and miss but very affordable and vendors will always exchange ones that don't work, they cost around 250/-300/- (if you are really clever you can find them for 150/- I gather). Small pirate dvd rental places are everywhere, they rent for 150/- per disc and generally have season series as well as films.

DSTV is great if you are an avid sports fan. Google the South African provider 'Multichoice' - they have movie channels and a few UK BBC channel (BBC lifestyle/food/entertainment/knowledge/history/crime/wildlife). It's all quite expensive. For a new PVR Decoder with multi-recording facility, HD channels, running more than one TV set, - it costs up to 8000/- per month. Probably Zuku could offer better deals.
